My paintings often mix a range of genre and methods (abstraction, direct observation, pop-surrealism, and photo-derived representation) to the paradoxical challenge of making works with authority and power committed to questioning authority and power. As One considers the fusion of riot police and demonstrators into a single liquified blob.

Biography
David Humphrey is a New York artist who has shown nationally and internationally. He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Rome Prize among other awards. An anthology of his art writing, Blind Handshake, was published by Periscope Publishing in 2010 and a new monograph on his work by Davy Lauterbach was published in 2020. He teaches in the MFA program at Columbia and is represented by the Fredericks & Freiser Gallery, NY. davidhumphreynyc.com
